Gaining Independence through Cooking

With social distancing laws in play, a lot of our regular 1:1 supported capacity building sessions are moving indoors and around the home.

Here are some great examples of what skills you can learn when given the right support and a platform to develop your independent living skills.

Daniel has been cooking at home for a while now and with the support of his Community Facilitator, Byron, Daniel has begun to produce some fine dishes. In this instance, a very tasty quiche.  Well done Daniel and Byron.

Mildura participant, Will, chooses new recipes to cook and is then supported to cook meals for the week and freezes them. Will now knows the process of how to defrost and reheat through the week, helping to ensure that he enjoys a variety in his diet and also that he eats healthy meals. He is becoming quite the chef with lots on his menu from Lasagna, Beef Macaroni, Cottage Pie and Stroganoff,  yum!.

With support from Community Facilitators, Charlotte & Talitha, Sherry is developing her cooking skills at home by baking some delicious cup cakes and a heart-shaped cake at home to share. They do look delicious. Well done Sherry and team.

Sal has been working on her independent living skills and developing her daily routine with the help of Community Facilitator, Julie.

Recently Sal has produced a risotto, a pasta dish and a very yummy apple pie. Great work Sal & Julie.

Learning to cook whilst at home is an essential skill when looking to be more independent and one that Sal is keen to develop.
